Trout Family Gives Symbol of Patriotism to Duneland YMCA Healthy Living Campus

The Duneland Family YMCA is proud to announce a generous philanthropic investment from Mike and Helene Trout, whose gift carries forward a family legacy of generosity, leadership, and community commitment. Their support will be recognized through the naming of the flagpole and monument on the YMCA Healthy Living Campus (YHLC), honoring their lasting impact on the organization and its future.

“The Trout Family’s generous investment in the Healthy Living Campus is a testament to their longstanding commitment to our community and the YMCA,” said Duneland Family YMCA CEO Dave Kasarda. “Their gift will create a meaningful gathering place that welcomes visitors to the campus while serving as a lasting symbol of patriotism, service, and community pride. We are deeply grateful for their support and honored to recognize their family through the naming of the flagpole and monument.”

For Mike and Helene, this investment continues a family tradition of giving, service, and belief in the YMCA’s mission. Inspired by a similar act of generosity by Helene’s mother in Arlington Heights, Illinois, the Trout family saw this opportunity as a way to honor values that have shaped their family for generations.

The Duneland Family YMCA has long been woven into the fabric of the family’s own story. Mike served on the YMCA’s Board of Directors during the late 1980s and early 1990s, a period of significant financial challenge when the organization still never wavered in its commitment to serving members and the broader community. That same spirit of service has been passed from one generation to the next. Today, their son, Jim, proudly serves on the Board, while their grandchildren have embraced the Y through its sports and youth programming. Their enduring connection shows how one generation’s generosity can inspire the next and strengthen the Duneland Family YMCA for years to come.

“The YMCA Healthy Living Campus is a game changer for our community. It has been uniquely developed to serve nearly every demographic, from infants to seniors, and it will be an asset that Duneland can be proud of for generations,” said Mike. “The Y has meant so much to our family over the years, and we are grateful to support this project in a meaningful way.”

A lasting legacy can begin with one act of giving. Learn more about supporting the YHLC by visiting www.dunelandymca.org/dunelandyhlc to discover how you can help strengthen the community for generations to come.

Duneland Family YMCA and Special Olympics Indiana-Porter County Celebrate Inclusion Through Partnership

The Duneland Family YMCA and Special Olympics Indiana-Porter County are pleased to announce a new collaboration that unites two community-centered organizations dedicated to inclusion, belonging, wellness, and opportunity.

The collaboration currently supports Special Olympics Indiana-Porter County’s aquatics program by providing access for athletes at the Duneland YMCA Healthy Living Campus’s indoor pool. With strong participation in swimming and more than 15 year-round sports offered locally, the partnership creates meaningful opportunities for athletes to train, connect, build confidence, and experience the joy of sport in a welcoming environment.

For Jennifer Mohoi, assistant county coordinator for Special Olympics Indiana-Porter County and a longtime Duneland Family YMCA member, the partnership is especially meaningful. Her daughter, Payton, has participated with Special Olympics for many years, and Mohoi’s family has been connected to the YMCA since moving to Chesterton in 2011 through childcare, summer camp, swimming, fitness, and community programs.

“As a single parent, I relied heavily on the after school and summer camp programs the Y offered. I am proud to say that to this day we are still close to some of the young adults that took care of my children back then,” said Mohoi, and she hopes that other athletes and their families find that same sense of being “home” while at the YMCA.

Serving more than 400 athletes and volunteers, Special Olympics Indiana-Porter County offers opportunities that extend far beyond competition. Through sports, athletes build confidence, develop friendships, discover their strengths, and experience a deep sense of belonging, as do their families, coaches, and supporters.

“The partnership between the Duneland Family YMCA and Special Olympics Indiana-Porter County represents the very best of what community is all about,” said Dave Kasarda, CEO of the Duneland Family YMCA. “Together, we are creating opportunities for athletes of all abilities to learn, grow, compete, and thrive in an environment built on inclusion, respect, and belonging. We are excited to work alongside Special Olympics to ensure that every individual has the chance to reach their full potential and experience the life-changing power of sports, friendship, and community.”

Mohoi encourages community members to support the partnership by volunteering, coaching, attending events, becoming a Unified partner, or supporting local fundraising efforts. No special experience is required, only an open heart and a willingness to be part of something meaningful.

Place to Purpose Community Breakfast Celebrates Momentum of Duneland YMCA Healthy Living Campus Project, Announces $1 Million Gift

Place to Purpose Community Breakfast Celebrates Momentum of Duneland YMCA Healthy Living Campus Project, Announces $1 Million Gift

The Duneland Family YMCA hosted the well-attended Place to Purpose Community Breakfast on Tuesday, May 5th, at Sand Creek Country Club, which brought together civic leaders, supporters, and residents alike for a morning filled with reflection, progress updates, and a major announcement supporting the future of the Duneland YMCA Healthy Living Campus (YHLC).

The event opened with a look back at the Duneland YMCA’s legacy, as Board Member Jim Trout led attendees through a nostalgic trip down memory lane in recognition of the organization’s 60th anniversary as a cornerstone of the community. As the Duneland community has grown over the last six decades, so too have the needs of its residents—needs that Dave Kasarda, Duneland Family YMCA CEO, identified years ago, helping spark early visioning and planning for what would become the transformative YHLC project.

Midway through the event, Board President Jeff Berglund provided an update on the project’s progress. With fundraising efforts continuing to gain momentum, the Y remains on track to break ground in the end of 2026 on the new building portion of the project in the heart of downtown Chesterton. This phase will include a new gymnasium featuring state-of-the-art basketball courts, along with a new entryway and lobby designed to welcome thousands of visitors to campus daily. A builder at heart, Berglund said this exciting final phase is anticipated to reach completion in January 2028.

For Berglund, the project is personal. “Growing up in Chesterton, the YMCA was always part of our community and part of my family’s life. To now serve on the board during this transformational moment for the Duneland Family YMCA means a lot to me personally,” said Berglund. “I know this project will have a lasting impact on local families and help strengthen our community for years to come.”

While the fundraising process, often referred to by Kasarda as a marathon and not a sprint, continues toward the project’s $30 million goal, attendees at the breakfast were privy to an exciting public announcement: a $1 million gift from Employee Owners of Urschel, providing a significant boost in the campaign’s final stretch. Employees from Urschel were in attendance, and their generous commitment to the project was met with a standing ovation!

As an employee-owned company with deep local roots, Urschel said supporting the project aligns naturally with its culture of philanthropy. “Philanthropy continues to be part of the Urschel culture. Urschel continues to support local communities where our employees work and live. For our company’s part, we will be donating funds toward the construction of the new gym area,” said Dan Marchetti, CFO of Urschel.

Kasarda praised the employee-led spirit behind the gift and emphasized what their support will make possible for the community. “The generosity shown by the employees of Urschel is more than a gift—it is a powerful expression of belief in our mission and in the people we serve. Their collective commitment will leave a lasting mark on this community, creating opportunities, strengthening lives, and ensuring that our impact endures for generations to come. We are deeply grateful for their partnership and their extraordinary spirit of giving.”

The eventful morning concluded with a surprise recognition honoring Kasarda for 40 years of selfless service to the YMCA, both locally now in Duneland and across other Indiana communities in years prior. Accepting the recognition, Kasarda pointed back to the YMCA’s mission and the importance of ensuring access for all. “Forty years is a long time, but this recognition isn’t really about me—it’s about the mission we’ve all been called to carry forward,” said Kasarda. “The YMCA has always been at its best when it opens its doors wide, making sure every child, every family, every senior has a place to belong—regardless of their ability to pay. I’ve simply had the privilege of being part of that work, alongside so many others who believe that opportunity should never be limited by circumstance.”

In remarks shared during the presentation, Kasarda was credited with having “a knack for collecting people,” a sentiment reflected in the strong network of supporters rallying behind the YHLC vision. As the project marches forward, that collective support continues to play a vital role in bringing this once-in-a-generation investment to Northwest Indiana, ensuring the Y remains a vibrant, responsive resource for decades to come. DUNELAND YMCA SPIN-A-THON RAISES RECORD FUNDS TO EXPAND ACCESS FOR ALL

The Duneland Family YMCA hosted its annual Pedal for a Purpose SPIN-A-THON, Spinning with Heart on Friday, February 20, bringing the community together for an evening of energy, teamwork, and generosity in support of the YMCA Annual Support Campaign. Funds raised through the Annual Support Campaign ensure that no one is turned away due to an inability to pay, providing financial assistance for memberships, child care, swim lessons, youth sports, and life-changing health and wellness programs.

This year’s event welcomed 45 participants, forming nine teams of five riders who competed to raise the most funds and log the most miles. It was a record-breaking year for the event, with participants surpassing previous fundraising milestones and making an even greater impact on the community.

The YMCA is deeply grateful for the incredible support of our community supporters, whose generosity and belief in our mission helped make this event truly meaningful and impactful. This year’s sponsors include The Times Media Company, Crystal Soliday Realtor, Berglund Construction, Trout Glass and Mirror, Trinity Displays, AJ’s Pizza Co., Northshore Health Centers, PartyLyfe Entertainment, and Kilgore Trout. Their generosity and commitment to our mission played a vital role in the success of the event.

“The outstanding results of our 2026 Spin-a-thon are a powerful testament to the generosity and spirit of our community,” said Dave Kasarda, Duneland Family YMCA CEO. “Every dollar raised will directly support our Annual Support Campaign, ensuring that YMCA programs, services, and memberships remain accessible to all — regardless of their ability to pay. This is what the Y is all about: strengthening our community and making sure everyone has the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive.”

The first-place fundraising team was awarded to Team Love Handles, made up of Jessica Amling, Ramona Catherman, Karen Karriman, Lana Reiser and Jim Trout. The top individual fundraiser honors went to Izzy Hutnick for her outstanding efforts leading up to the event.

Competition on the bikes was fierce, with two teams tying for the most miles at 63 each. Clark Gloyeske and Mark Dickinson also led the way individually, each riding 15 miles for the highest mileage of the evening.

“I’m so proud of the energy and community spirit we had during our 2026 Spin-A-Thon,” said Julianne Schager, Director of Healthy Living. “Events like this remind us of the power of coming together to move, support one another, and make a lasting impact. We’re so grateful to every participant, sponsor, volunteer, and supporter who helped make this year’s Spin-A-Thon a huge success!”

The YMCA is incredibly grateful to the community partners who helped make this event so special. Thank you to AJ’s Pizza for keeping our riders fueled, to DJ Angel from PartyLyfe Entertainment for donating his time and bringing unforgettable energy to the room, and to The Times Media Company for providing an amazing United Center suite experience for our top fundraising team. Their generosity and support truly made the night one to remember. 2026 Pedal for a Purpose SPIN-A-THON is more than a ride. It is the YMCA mission in motion. Every mile pedaled and every dollar raised directly supports programs that promote healthy living, strengthen community connections, and expand access to essential services across the Duneland community. As a result of this support, more children, families, and seniors will be able to participate in life-changing YMCA programs and gain the resources, relationships, and support they need to reach their full potential.

DUNELAND FAMILY YMCA HEALTHY LIVING CAMPUS UNVEILS CREATIVE EXCHANGE + SOUND STUDIO DEDICATED TO TY BALON

The Duneland Family YMCA is proud to unveil a special space, Creative Exchange + Sound Studio, dedicated to Ty Balon, a gifted musician and digital artist who used the healing power of music and art to navigate his journey with epilepsy. “We are deeply grateful to Crystal Soliday for her generous capital gift, which will make possible the Creative Exchange + Sound Studio in memory of Ty Balon,” said Dave Kasarda, CEO of Duneland Family YMCA. “This space will honor Ty’s legacy by inspiring creativity, connection, and self-expression for years to come. Crystal’s thoughtfulness ensures that Ty’s spirit continues to resonate in a way that uplifts others and brings lasting impact to our community.”

Ty’s story is one of resilience, expression, and heart. Diagnosed with epilepsy as a child, he found his peace through music and visual design. Channeling his emotions into creative outlets, Ty developed into a deeply talented artist known for his emotive lyrics, bold artwork, and generous spirit. Though his life ended far too soon, his impact continues to ripple through the community he loved.

“Meet me in the skylines, I will wait for you to go.”
~Ty Balon

This new room will stand as a tribute to Ty’s life and legacy, made possible by the efforts of his mother, Crystal Soliday, who wants to ensure that other children and families in Chesterton and the surrounding communities can access the same creative outlets that brought her son hope and joy. “This room is more than just a space,” said Crystal. “It’s a sanctuary for kids to find their creativity, just like Ty did. My hope is that they’ll walk in here and feel inspired, empowered, and encouraged to create.”

Located on the second floor of the new Duneland Family YMCA Healthy Living Campus, the Creative Exchange + Sound Studio in Memory of Ty Balon will be designed for multi-purpose use—supporting creative collaboration, music lessons, songwriting, community workspaces, recording, mixing audio, and more. The space will also feature original digital artwork and lyrics by Ty on the walls, a testament to his vivid imagination and skilled design work. A QR code installation within the room will allow visitors to listen to Ty’s music and connect with his story in a powerful, personal way. The new space will be a key feature of the YMCA’s broader investment in the new Duneland YMCA Healthy Living Campus, which is designed to support physical, mental, and emotional well-being through inclusive, community-based programs. By fostering creativity and artistic expression, the YMCA continues to expand its mission of youth development, social responsibility, and healthy living in new and meaningful ways.

Community members who are inspired by Ty’s story can honor his legacy by donating to the Duneland Family YMCA in his memory. Contributions will support ongoing youth programming and ensure the space remains a vibrant hub for generations of creativity to come. “We are honored to support the Duneland Family YMCA’s Healthy Living Campus and the impact it will have on both the physical and mental wellness of the entire community,” said Shannon Donnelly. “The Y is not just a ‘swim and gym;’ its mission is to provide programming that builds a healthy mind, body, and spirit for all, from infancy through the senior years. We hope this new studio will continue the Y’s outstanding work in Duneland—helping people build connections and stronger ties to the community, as well as healthier lifestyles—just as it has done for every member of our own family.”

Shannon Donnelly and Corey Hecht, both originally from neighboring counties, have lived in Porter County for the past several years and are establishing their roots in Duneland as they raise their family. STEAM Like a Girl Event Inspires Youth at Duneland Family YMCA Healthy Living Campus

The Duneland Family YMCA, in partnership with the Women’s International Network of Utility Professionals (WiNUP) Metro Chicago Chapter, hosted the inaugural STEAM Like A Girl event at the Duneland Family YMCA Healthy Living Campus this past weekend in Chesterton, Indiana. The event was a resounding success, welcoming girls ages 8–14 from all over the Northwest Indiana Region for a day of hands-on learning and exploration.

Over the course of the day, participants engaged with seven interactive STEAM zones—chemistry, environmental science, art, renewable energy, electrolytes, weather, robotics, and technology. Each activity was designed to spark curiosity, build confidence, and empower the next generation of innovators. By the end of the event, every girl left not only more knowledgeable but also motivated to continue exploring STEAM opportunities in the future. “Events like this are critical for showing young girls that they belong in science, technology, engineering, art, and math,” said Amy Curtis of Duneland Family YMCA. “It was inspiring to watch their creativity and confidence grow as they explored each zone. This is exactly the kind of impact the YMCA and strives to make in the communities we serve.” Nikki Goodson of NiSource and WiNUP representative added “As women in the utilities sector, we are committed to empowering the next generation of women in STEAM. Now more than ever, it’s essential to show young girls that they not only deserve a seat at any table—they belong there. That’s the driving mission behind the WiNUP STEM Community Outreach Committee.”

The Duneland Family YMCA and WiNUP extend their deepest gratitude to the dedicated volunteers and staff whose tireless efforts made this community event possible. A very special thank-you goes to the summer camp t-shirt and tote bag design winners whose artwork helped make the event even more memorable. This event would not have been possible without the generous support of sponsors: Herc Rentals, Hitachi Global Air Power US LLC, Keramida Inc., Make Make Art, NIPSCO, NiSource, and Once Upon A Coconut. Appreciation is also extended to volunteers from NIPSCO, NiSource, Dunes Learning Center, Hemlock and Lace Photography LLC, Healthy Jasmine, and many others who contributed their time and expertise.

The success of this first-ever STEAM Like A Girl event reflects the power of collaboration and community in inspiring future leaders. Plans are already underway to continue building on this momentum for years to come.

DUNELAND YMCA ADJUSTS MAIN ENTRANCE DURING ONGOING CONSTRUCTION

The Duneland Family YMCA has announced a temporary main entrance adjustment in effect beginning Monday, September 22nd. This temporary main entrance modification is scheduled for the ongoing construction taking place at the Duneland YMCA Healthy Living Campus, and will continue through weeks to come.

The main entrance of the Duneland YMCA Healthy Living Campus, up until September 22nd, has been at Door 11, also known as the “Pool Entrance”. This entrance will be temporarily gated off for safety measures while construction takes place. Instead, all visitors will be asked to use the “Auditorium Entrance” that is located on Morgan Ave. beginning on September 22nd until construction is complete at Door 11.

The parking lot accessed from Porter Ave. will remain open for use, along with a parking lot on the corner of Morgan Ave and Chesterton Blvd. Additionally, street parking will be available.

“We’re excited to be making improvements to the Duneland Family YMCA Healthy Living Campus to better serve our members and community,” says Amy Curtis, YMCA Senior Director of Programs and Partnerships. “While Door 11 will be temporarily closed for sidewalk replacement, we appreciate everyone’s patience as we work to create a safer and more accessible entrance.” The Duneland Family YMCA encourages community members to remain alert while visiting the area and appreciates their patience as the campus undergoes this vital transformation. DUNELAND FAMILY YMCA HEALTHY LIVING CAMPUS UNVEILS HEALTHY AGING CENTER THANKS TO GENEROUS DONORS

The Duneland Family YMCA is proud to announce the unveiling of the John & Laurie (Wehner) Evans Healthy Aging Center, a welcoming space where older adults can thrive by staying active, engaged, and supported.

This space—formerly known as the Senior Center—offers opportunities for physical wellness, learning, social connection, and emotional well-being, all in one place. With programs designed to nurture the body, mind, and spirit, the Evans Healthy Living Center will help individuals to maintain their independence, build community, and embrace aging with vitality and purpose.

“We chose to support the Duneland Family YMCA’s Healthy Aging Center because the Y prioritizes senior wellness, creating opportunities for people 55 and older to maintain healthy lifestyles and meaningful social interactions, which are so very important,” John Evans said. “Laurie’s initial interactions with the Y focused on seniors, and they continue to hold a dear place in her heart.”

The Evans Family’s history in Porter County is a rich one. For years John has operated a well-established funeral home business and served the community as Porter County Commissioner as well as Coroner. Health and wellness have long been central as well to Laurie, who’s dedicated more than 40 years to a career in nursing, spanning emergency services and occupational health.

Located on the first floor of the new YMCA Healthy Living Campus, the John & Laurie (Wehner) Evans Healthy Aging Center is designed as a versatile, multi-purpose space serving the region’s older adults through enrichment activities, educational programs, fitness classes, games, and more.

While construction on the new main entrance continues, visitors are welcome to experience this vibrant new resource by using the temporary entrance at the Door 11—the pool entrance—off the West Porter Ave. parking lot south of the YMCA Healthy Living Campus, 651 West Morgan Ave., Chesterton.
